About the society

The Groote Sociëteit and d' Eglantier Association in Maastricht, founded in 1760, was an exclusive men's club whose members included prominent citizens, canons and soldiers. In elegant and refined surroundings, members met to enjoy drinks, card games and billiards, and to gossip. The society also had a strong involvement in the city's cultural life, with shareholders in the city theatre and an impressive collection of newspapers and magazines. Wonderful history

Cultural heritage

Besides their activities in the city, the society also had a beautiful country house called Slavante, where open-air concerts took place. During World War II, the building was damaged and looted, but after the war, the society recovered and continued to grow. Today, membership is more accessible and the Groote Sociëteit remains a vibrant part of Maastricht's cultural heritage, where members come together to carry on traditions and enjoy the warm fellowship offered by this historical society.
